This is general guidance based on self-reported answers—not a security audit, vulnerability scan, penetration test, compliance certification, or guarantee that an environment is secure.
How scoring and privacy work
Model version 1.0. Each applicable health answer earns 0%, 50%, or 100% of its question’s weight. “Not sure” earns a provisional 25% and generates a visibility finding rather than asserting a missing control. Explicitly inapplicable questions are excluded, not counted as perfect answers.
Overall score = earned weighted points ÷ applicable weighted points × 100, rounded to a whole number. Category scores use the same formula within each category. High-impact controls carry weights of 4–5; supporting practices use 2–3. Business size and IT-provider type do not change the score. Automation answers are excluded and reported as opportunity levels.
85–100: Strong; 70–84: Good foundation; 50–69: Needs attention; below 50: Significant gaps. Unknown answers make scores provisional; a possible range shows their effect. An aggregate score never cancels out a specific important gap. These are editorial self-assessment weights, not a validated risk model or a compliance framework.
Foundational topics are informed by NIST’s small-business guidance and CISA’s backup and recovery guidance. Neither organization endorses this tool or its scoring.
Findings are ranked by question weight × the unearned fraction. Unknown answers receive a 0.6 ranking multiplier so they are not treated as confirmed missing controls. Up to five findings are shown; fewer are shown when fewer gaps exist. Automation uses the average of known answers: 0 for little rework, 0.5 for some, and 1 for substantial recurring work. An average of at least 0.75 is High, at least 0.25 is Moderate, otherwise Low. With no known answers, it is Not assessed. No monetary savings are inferred.
Only predefined answer IDs, the current step, and a timestamp are saved locally when device saving is enabled. Names, contact details, and messages are never saved. “Clear assessment” removes this tool’s saved answers. No responses go into page URLs, analytics, or server storage. Saved progress expires seven days after the last save and is discarded on the next visit; your browser may retain the expired record until that visit. Printing, copying, or sending a summary creates a copy under your control.
