A practical learning environment for running, monitoring, and securing services while building infrastructure instincts beyond classroom labs.

Overview

This homelab is a personal infrastructure environment for virtualization, storage planning, monitoring, DNS filtering, remote access, and security tooling.

Problem

I wanted hands-on experience running real services, watching them fail, monitoring uptime, and learning how infrastructure decisions affect security and reliability.

My Role

I plan, deploy, document, monitor, and iterate on the environment as a learning platform for infrastructure and cybersecurity tooling.

Tools Used

Proxmox TrueNAS Uptime Kuma AdGuard UniFi OS Server Wazuh CrowdSec Tailscale 10Gb Networking

Process

  • Planned a virtualization layer for test services and monitoring tools.
  • Mapped storage and backup needs before expanding NAS/media infrastructure.
  • Added uptime and security tooling to observe service behavior.
  • Used remote access and DNS filtering to make the lab more realistic.

Challenges

The biggest challenge is balancing experimentation with stability. A useful homelab should allow testing without becoming too fragile to rely on for learning.

Outcome

Built a practical environment for monitoring services, testing infrastructure ideas, learning networking, and experimenting with security tooling.

What I Learned

Infrastructure learning improves when services are visible. Monitoring, logs, alerting, and diagrams make it easier to understand what is actually happening.
